10 Ways to Stay Active Outdoors This Winter

things to do outside in winter

Don’t let the cold weather keep you indoors this season! Bundle up and check these activities off your winter bucket list.

    1. Sledding

You don’t have to be a kid (or have a kid) to go sledding this year! Visit your local sled hill or forest preserve to let the fun begin.

Here are a few sled options to get you started: Flexible Flyer (wooden + metal sled – fun, but could be dangerous is lots of kids are on the hill), Flexible Flyer Baby Sled (made from wood, this sled was a favorite in our home through age 3), and Lucky Bums (sleds are BPA and phthalate free, but they also have a sled made from recycled plastic. These definitely hold up better than other plastic sleds I’ve had in the past).

    2. Skiing | Snowboarding | Cross Country Skiing

One of my favorite winter activities… Not only is skiing/snowboarding a great way to burn energy this winter, but it’s also fun and something you can learn at any age! There are lots of resorts throughout the U.S. and Canada with some favorites being in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Telluride.

    3. Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is an affordable, fun way to keep your body in motion when the winter wind blows. Check out this guide for beginners from REI for information on what to expect, gear to pack, and tips galore!

    4. Snowmobiling

Whether you go snowmobiling near a ski town or just around your local forest preserve, you’re sure to have a blast! Gosnowmobiling.org provides helpful information on destinations, rentals, safety and other resources for those in the United States and Canada. P.S. Don’t forget your helmet!

    5. Ice Skating

Lace up your skates and enjoy some good old fashion fun! Check out local outdoor skating rinks in your area or visit an indoor one. If you’re feeling ambitious, make your very own ice skating rink at home! Here are a few options for DIY ice rink kits (make sure you get the real ice, not the synthetic – unless that is what you want) plus some tips for first timers!

    6. Ice Fishing

Although I’m not personally a big fisherman, I know how much others love ice fishing in the winter and I’m always up for anything outdoors! Takemefishing.org is a great reference for first timers and includes information on where to fish, helpful tips, and more!

    7. Snow Tubing

Like sledding, snow tubing is fun for the whole family! Sure, you can buy your own tube and use it on a local hill, but when you feel like venturing off to a new locale, check out nearby destinations that are made specifically for snow tubing! Rentals are available at many places too.

    8. Hiking

Pack on the layers and lace up those snow boots as you enjoy a winter hike through local forest preserves, trails, state parks, arboretums, botanic gardens or wherever your legs take you!

    9. Horseback Riding

While this is a less active winter sport (for you, not the horse), it’s still fun way to break up long winter days! Check your local area for stables that offer rides during the snowy season too.

    10. Play in the snow!

Whether you are building a snowman, fortress, or having a good old fashioned snowball fight, let your inner kid run wild this winter! P.S. Even before we had kids, we always played in the snow with our pup – don’t lose that inner child!

Studies have shown getting outside, even in the dead of winter, will boost your mood and increase your vitamin D levels which help to support your immune system, brain function and helps your body absorb calcium. So Stay safe and warm this season OUTDOORS!
