Free of toxic chemicals like lead, BPA, PVC, and latex, Stasher bags can also be used in the microwave, dishwasher, and even in the oven, making them a staple in my home for years to come!

Check out some of my favorite uses for Stasher Bags below.

    1. Ice Pack / Heat Pack

When I was on the hunt to find a PVC-free ice pack for my little one’s ouchies, I couldn’t believe how hard it was to find a good alternative. That is when I thought to fill a smaller stasher bag half full with water and lay them flat in the freezer. It works wonders for headaches and boo-boos!!

Additionally, if your looking for a DIY heating pad, you can fill a Stasher bag with rice, heat in the microwave, and soothe sore muscles.

Tip: Don’t forget – you can store Band-Aids and other first aid essentials in a Stasher bag as well!

    2. Food Storage & Toddler Snack Bags

The obvious one! Stasher bags are perfect for storing just about any food item! Think: fresh fruit, leftover pizza, pasta, baby food, toddler snacks, sandwiches, nuts, and so much more! Best of all, they are compact enough to “stash” in your purse – making it oh-so-simple to bring restaurant leftovers home!

    3. Makeup and Toiletry Storage

Over the summer, I went on vacation and used two large Stashers to store my hair products, makeup, and skincare items. Not only was this a great no-waste solution, but it was PVC-free as well!

    4. Waterproof “Wallet” for Phones, Medications and More

This summer, I stored my credit card, ID, pool passes, chapstick and even my phone in a single snack pack Stasher! It was the perfect size and best of all was waterproof without the yucky chemicals. This is probably one of my favorite uses!

And if your looking for the perfect size to store medications and more, check out these tiny bags.

    5. Toy and Art Supply Storage

Legos, crayons, craft supplies, DIY playdough and so much more can be stored in these durable bags. Mix and match to create a colorful rainbow of fun!

    6. Beach “Must-Haves” Storage

A wet swimsuit can really put a damper on your day. Store bathing suits, lotions, and other water essentials in a Stasher bag and reuse it later!

Tip: To get the most use out of your versatile Stasher, pack it with snacks to enjoy at the beach and toss your wet suit in after the sun goes down.

We hope you enjoyed these sustainable ways to use Stasher bags!

    Happy Stashing!

7 Natural Urinary Tract Infection Remedies

You know the feeling... The frequent urge to pee, burning, cloudy urine, and perhaps even pelvic pain? These are all symptoms associated with urinary tract infections, commonly referred to as UTI’s.

Urinary tract infections occur when bacteria makes it way into the urinary tract and multiples, leading to an infection. Although antibiotics are often used to treat UTI’s, there are several reasons why they should not be the first remedy you reach for.

Antibiotics kill not only the bad bacteria, but also the good bacteria which can lead to yeast infections and other health issues. Over time, frequent use of these drugs can cause bacteria to become resistant to antibiotics. While antibiotic use is not ideal, in some more severe cases, antibiotics must be used. However, in mild cases or at the onset of symptoms, you can try one of the remedies below!

Please Note: In some cases, bacteria can make its way into the kidneys, so it is important to seek medical attention if you experience fever or severe symptoms. Always consult with a medical professional before supplementing.

    1. Raw Garlic

Raw garlic has antibacterial properties and studies show it can be an effective treatment when it comes to UTI’s. Simply ingest raw garlic cloves at the first sign of your symptoms. Begin taking 2 cloves per day after a meal. Increase the amount depending on how much you can tolerate. Garlic pills are also also available if the thought of eating the cloves makes you queasy!

    2. 100% Pure Cranberry Juice

Studies show cranberry juice can be effective at preventing bacteria from adhering to the urinary tract. Be sure to choose a cranberry juice made only with pure cranberries and zero added sweeteners like this one. You may also take a cranberry extract or cranberry pills, if preferred.

    3. D-Mannose

D-Mannose is a sugar that prevents bacteria from adhering to the urinary tract. Unlike other sugars, it remains unmetabolized and has been known to be an effective treatment when it comes to UTI’s, although more studies are needed to confirm its effectiveness. A supplemental form of D-Mannose can be purchased and taken at the onset of symptoms.

Amazon Find! This Cranberry + D-Mannose Supplement seems promising! Although I haven’t needed to use this yet, I will say I am a fan of the brand’s products overall.

    4. Vitamin C

Taking a supplemental form of vitamin C may increase the acidity of your urine and helps your immune system work at an optimal level which can help fight bacteria causing UTI’s. This is the one we use.

    5. Organic Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has so many beneficial uses and treating a UTI is one of them! Acetic acid, found in apple cider vinegar, is said to help to reduce the growth of bacteria. Simply mix 1-2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar with water and drink the concoction on an empty stomach. If needed, add honey to distract from the taste.

    6. Probiotics

Probiotics can “bind to uroepithelial cells and inhibit pathogenic growth” resulting in treatment and prevention of UTI’s. Personally, my family and I regularly take this probiotic and I would suggest taking them when you have a UTI as well.

    7. Water

Drinking plenty of water is key in preventing and curing UTI’s!!! You’ll want to flush everything out of your system and keep your body hydrated so it can fight the infection quickly and effectively.

    What To Avoid

    • Avoid alcohol, coffee, and sugary drinks.
    • Avoid sugar as much as possible.
    • Avoid processed foods as much as possible.

    Stay healthy & happy!

The Ultimate Healthy Halloween Guide 2021: Costume Ideas, Organic Candy + Candy-Free Treats, and More!

Every year, toxic ingredients pop up in holiday decor… and Halloween is no different. Exposure to chemicals found in vinyl costumes, masks, candy, and decorations have been linked to behavioral problems, hormonal issues, obesity and even cancer. At the present time, regulations are not put in place to protect us or our children from many of these health-altering toxins, but the good news is, as consumers, we can choose safer alternatives for both our families and world.

In this guide, we will touch on the following topics:

    • Eco-Friendly Costume + Face Paint Ideas
    • Candy-Free Treat Ideas
    • Organic Halloween Candy
    • Pumpkin Carving & Decorating Tips
    • Switch Witch Idea + Where to Donate Leftover Candy
    • What to Avoid

Eco-Conscious Costume + Safe Face Painting Ideas

COSTUMES | Year after year, millions of costumes are mass produced for the sole purpose of being worn for just one day! In 2020, approximately $2.6 billion U.S. dollars were spent on Halloween costumes alone. These cheaply made costumes are often made from polyester with plastic accessories and components that break easily. Talk about ‘fast fashion’! The good news is, there are ways to have a more sustainable Halloween.

Here are a few Eco-Conscious Costume Ideas that come to mind:

    • Make your own costumes using old clothing, sheets, cardboard boxes, and other households goods! Primary.com has hundreds of easy DIY costumes for kiddos!
    • Borrow from a friend or neighbor.
    • Rent from a costume shop.
    • Browse a thrift store online or in-person. Poshmark, the Facebook Marketplace and Buy Nothing groups are great places to start.
    • Purchase cute hand-made options from Etsy if you aren’t ready to channel your inner creative genius.
    • Purchase a safer costume option. If you’re looking to purchase an eco-friendly costume this year, you’ll want to consider the following brands: Hanna Andersson, Monica & Andy , Sarah’s Silks, and Magic Cabin.
    • Sustainable Trick-or-Treat Bag. Pull out the pillow cases or purchase a cute, reusable cotton treat bag for your kiddos this year and avoid sending another plastic Halloween bag to the landfill!

FACE PAINT | Traditional makeup and face paint are often full of some not-so-great ingredients. Ingredients like phthalates, parabens, formaldehyde, lead, and other heavy metals pose a significant health risk to us, our children, and our Earth AND can be found in both face paints and everyday cosmetics. Since the FDA does not require the testing of cosmetic products or ingredients prior to them appearing on store shelves, we must be conscious consumers and choose products that are safe for our families.

Here are a few safe Face Painting Ideas to try this year:

    • Go Green Face Paint is an organic face paint, made in the USA, and tested by Tamara Rubin, Lead Safe Mama. Learn more about her scientific-based testing here.
    • Earth Paint and Elegant Minerals are two other face paint brands that are made in the USA and use natural pigments.
    • Piggy Paint is a great toxin-free nail polish option for little ones.
    • Clean, non-toxic makeup of your own can be used to create just about any look you want to achieve!

    Candy-Free Treat Ideas

If you’re looking for candy-free options for trick-or-treaters this year, consider the following ideas.

    1. Stickers
    2. Bouncy Balls
    3. Halloween Erasers
    4. Halloween Pencils
    5. Halloween Stamps
    6. Mini Halloween Notepads
    7. Mini Halloween Coloring Books
    8. Slap Bracelets
    9. Mini Bubble Wands
    10. Wikki Sticks
    11. Glow Sticks | Although glow sticks are not an eco-friendly solution, kids really enjoy them for the evening – and adults do too!
    12. Mini Playdough | Not as non-toxic as I’d prefer, it is still a good candy free Trick-or-Treat option.
    13. Granola Bars
    14. Crackers & Snack Packs
    15. Natural Fruit Leather
    16. Made Good Snack Packs
    17. Mini Pumpkins

    Organic Halloween Candy Options

Whether you have a serious sweet tooth or are looking for healthier Halloween candy options, we’ve got your covered! The following organic candies are a “healthier” option and do not contain artificial flavors, artificial colors, high fructose corn syrup, or yucky, questionable ingredients.

    Pumpkin Carving + Decorating Tips

Decorate using natural Halloween decor. Pumpkins, cornstalks, gourds and haystacks are a fall staple in (and around) my home! This natural decor simply screams fall! Best of all, it is compostable and goes right back into the Earth.

Create DIY Halloween Decorations. Milk jugs, cardboard, and old clothing can all be used to make cool, eco-friendly Halloween decor! Checkout Pinterest for some ideas.

Purchase a Pumpkin Carving Tools Set made to last! Most tools are made from a cheap metal and flimsy plastic and they NEVER last longer than a year! This carving set is made from wood and stainless steel – a much more eco-friendly alternative that will save you money in the long run!

Choose a natural beeswax tea candle. Paraffin waxes are made from petroleum and pollute the air we breathe. Opting for a natural beeswax candle with a cotton wick is a much healthier alternative.

Carve the pumpkin, eat the seeds, & don’t forget to compost!! Pumpkin seeds are full of vitamins and nutrients. Roast the seeds and enjoy a delicious snack after all of your hard work! When the festivities are over, avoid the landfill and remember to compost your pumpkin afterwards. Check out composting some tips here.

    What to Avoid this Halloween

As an eco-conscious consumer, there are a few things you’ll want to avoid this Halloween:

Costumes made from from vinyl/PVC. Often masks, shiny or flexible plastics are made from PVC which contains chemicals linked to hormonal problems, lower IQ, and numerous health issues. Costumes containing foam are not great for the environment and most likely contain toxic flame retardants.

Cheap plastic jewelry. Plastic jewelry often contains are harmful chemicals such as phthalates, plasticizers, and may even contain heavy metals like lead and antimony. Plus, so many cheaply made plastic items break quickly, sending them directly into a landfill!

Costumes labeled as “Flame Resistant”. This indicates flame resistant chemicals were most likely – unless the product is naturally flame resistant which is NOT the case with most costumes. Flame retardants are known to cause a host of health issues from behavioral problems to cancer.

Rubber face masks. This may be difficult to avoid if your kiddo just HAS to be his or her favorite superhero… And I get it… it’s only one day, for a few hours. This is one of those “weigh-your-options” scenarios. A few thoughts to consider: 1.) Most are probably made with toxic chemicals and perhaps heavy metals. 2.) Not Eco-friendly and most are not recyclable. 3.) Smell Test: If you can smell that plastic-y smell as soon as it is opened, it is probably something you’ll want to avoid.

Eh…Glitter. This is a hard one for me! Prior to learning about toxins, this girl was 100% all about glitter! But, the reality is, glitter is bad for the environment and most contain phthalates and other yucky chemicals.

Faux polyester spider web decor. Not only can birds and other wildlife get caught in this type of web, but more than likely, you will dispose of it the same year you purchased it.

The festivities are over… What to do with alllll that leftover candy!?

    1. The Switch Witch tradition is a healthy way to enjoy all of the fun, festive Halloween activities without all of the sugary sweets. As the tale goes, the Switch Witch visits your home on Halloween night and swaps out sugary treats for a toy or other goodies! If you don’t want your kiddo to miss out on all of the candy fun, you can throw in some organic candy or simply let them have a few pieces after trick-or-treating. Buy The Tale of the Switch Witch Book on Amazon today by clicking here!
    2. Donate to a good cause! Today wrote an article a while back that shared 6 organizations that accept leftover candy. Now, you can feel good about giving away the goodies! Here’s the list: Treats for Troops, Halloween Candy Buy Back, Operation Gratitude, Operation Trick or Treating for the Troops, and Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Looking for other non-toxic favorites for your family? Check out my Amazon Storefront for my favorite toxin-free products.

    Happy Halloween!!

5 Natural Ways To Hydrate Your Body

Dry mouth? Dark urine? Headaches? Fatigue? Your body may be lacking adequate hydration.

Staying hydrated keeps our bodies running at the optimal level by assisting with organ function, delivering nutrients to cells, and aiding in digestive function among other things!

Unfortunately, many hydrating products on the market today may be doing more harm than good. Preservatives, artificial flavors, synthetic colors, and an overload of sugar are not good for our body or our mind and should be avoided. The good news is, there are natural ways to hydrate without all the yuck!

Check out the natural tips below and begin hydrating your body from the inside out!

    1. Hydrate with lemon water in the A.M.

After a long night’s rest, it is best to start your day with a big glass of H2O – around 30 ounces or so. Whether warm or cold, adding fresh lemon to your water adds not only a dose of vitamin C, but also essential electrolytes like potassium, magnesium, and calcium to your drink.

Either way, H2O is the way to go!

*Pro Tip: Be sure to use an effective water filtration system. Pure Effects is the system I own and highly recommend!

    2. Coconut Water

Not only is coconut water packed with nutrients, but it is also an excellent natural source of hydration.

Here are a few tips to consider when choosing the healthiest, hydrating coconut water possible:

    • Read the ingredient label. Avoid added sugars, artificial flavors, and preservatives.
    • Choose a coconut water that is pink in color. The pink color comes from a natural process and ensures artificial preservatives have not been used.

This certified organic coconut water is our go-to brand. Not only is it minimally processed, but I love that you can purchase it by the case or simply by the bottle!

    3. Electrolytes / DIY Pedialyte

Electrolytes are essential when it comes to hydrating the body. In fact, people often don’t realize they may not be consuming enough electrolytes. Sodium, potassium, and magnesium are three electrolytes your body needs to thrive. Whether your make your own DIY “Pedialyte” drink or purchase a premade option, always be sure to to avoid added sugars, artificial flavors and artificial colors. Check out my DIY electrolyte drink here.

    The Top Electrolytes For Hydration

    1. Seeking Health Electrolyte (my top choice)
    2. Pediavance (most similar to Pedialyte without the artificial ingredients)
    3. Ultima Replenisher
    4. Nuun

    4. Sea Salt

Not all salts are made equally! Sea salt contains dozens of traces of minerals that help balance your fluid levels and hydrate your body from the inside out, according to Healthline.

When choosing a specific salt brand, you’ll want to consider the fact that some salt contains higher amounts of heavy metals such as lead than others, according to Lead Safe Mama, LLC. Per her recommendation and heavy metal testing, I personally buy Jacobsen’s Sea Salt for my family and have been very happy with it.

    5. Fruits & Veggies

Certain fruits and veggies are composed of 90% water. If you’re looking to hydrate while filling your tummy, chomp on some delicious watermelon, honeydew, lettuce, cucumber, celery, or cantaloupe! You may also craft a homemade smoothie if preferred.

    Stay happy, healthy, and hydrated!
